Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, from Long Beach CA. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nurse in order to provide her with the chance to learn about art literature or theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious by her mother. While DuVernay grew up living in Compton with her parents, she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father recalled the civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was motivated to make a documentary on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles upon graduation. There she was awarded degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then look through their trash. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be a junior publicist at the studio that was small. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
